Day
1-
Arrive Guatemala City-private transfer to Antigua, founded in 1543. Stop
at a typical Guatemala restaurant for snacks or meal. Antigua,
with its majestic volcanoes and Maya culture is considered to be
the most beautiful Spanish Colonial city in Latin America. In
1979 the city was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This
is a safe, clean, and romantic town, ideal for a Honeymoon or vacation
trip. Overnight in Antigua.
Day
2- Antigua- After breakfast, a walking tour of Antigua
with private bilingual guide. Afternoon on your own. Enjoy
the courtyards and floral displays, or watch the people at the Plaza
Mayor. Overnight in Antigua.
Day
3- Chichicastenango- [The market is open Thursdays and
Sundays only]. Early transfer to ”Chichi.” This
market is famous for its handicraft and for the religious activity
at Santo Tomas Church where current Maya descendants worship with
intense devotion. You will find a variety of textiles, woodwork,
and masks. Natives dressed in their local attires come from
the neighboring towns to sell or barter their products. Late
afternoon drive to and overnight in Lake Atitlan.
Day
4- Lake Atitlan- For the Maya who still live in the area,
this is the birthplace of creation. Numerous villages surround
the lake. A visit to Santiago Atitlan by boat will take the
visitor to admire the embroidered clothing and appreciate the mixture
of Maximon, Evangelical, and Catholic beliefs. Overnight in
Antigua or in Guatemala City.
Day
5- Tikal- Early morning transfer to the airport in Guatemala
for a flight to the archeological site of Tikal for a full day private
guided tour. Tikal represents the architectural creativity
of the Maya people. It is a national park, where the native
flora and fauna still flourish relatively undisturbed and a place
where about 30 plus powerful rulers developed roads, managed 50,000
to 100,000 inhabitants, and excelled in astronomy, ceramic, agriculture,
and the paintings that decorate their buildings. Overnight
in Tikal/Flores area. Bring your binoculars.
Day
6- Tikal- A chance to continue visiting the different structures:
The Great Plaza, Temple I, II, and the North Acroplis. Time
for photography and to transport yourself in the Maya World civilization. Evening
flight to Guatemala. Overnight.
Day
7-8- Guatemala City- Founded in 1776, the city houses two
great cultural centers: the National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology
and the Museo Popul Vuh. A tour of the Cathedral Metropolitana
built in 1782, the Mercado Central, and the Palacio Nacional de
Cultura will give you a good idea of the traditional and historical
importance of Guatemala.
