The Maya in the South

Mexico - Belize - Guatemala - Honduras - El Salvador Day 1
Met at airport and transferred to the Camino Real Hotel. Time for optional activities depending on time of arrival.

Day 2
An all day tour to archaeological sites near the Capital. After driving for 30 minutes we arrive in Joyas del Ceren, known as the Pompeii of Mesoamerica. About 600 A.D. this Maya site was buried beneath the ashes of Loma Caldera, thus protecting its structures and features and allowing us to appreciate life in Middle Classic Mesoamerica. The rich archaeo-agricultural remains indicate that corn, chilies, squash, and cacao were more abundant than in present-day Salvador. Such abundance allowed the people to exchange the agricultural surplus with neighboring communities for exotic imports such as jade and obsidian (Jewels of Ceren). Closed on Mondays. Fifteen minutes from Joyas del Ceren is the Late Classic remains of San Andres discovered in 1977. Structure 5 is 35-foot high with 11 terraces. Anthropologic figurines have been found: obsidian blades, jade pendants and spindle whorls. A new site museum was opened in 1997. Stop for lunch before continuing to El Tazumal which in Quiche language means pyramids where victims were burned. The Classic ruins include a main pyramid, El Trapiche, Casa Blanca, Las Victorias and the ceremonial centers of Pampe. Some of the artifacts indicate active trade with former communities from Mexico to Panama. Return to your hotel by 6:30 p.m. Evening at leisure.

Day 3
Treat yourself to a morning tour of Cihuatan about an hour drive from the Capital. This complex dates to the early Preclassic. It is impressive to observe the obvious contact Cihuatan has with central Mexico, as shown by its multiethnic ceremonial centers. The Western Center has a walled, terraced plaza with two large I-shaped wall courts, a 40-foot tall main pyramid and an elite residence. This area is very warm. Return to the capital for lunch or box-lunch upon request.

Day 4
Optional activities in El Salvador, include Lake Ilopango, the largest in El Salvador (10 miles long with a depth of 820 feet). Los Chorros is a great spot for locals and visitors. Three pools of natural volcanic springs with waterfalls and beautiful surroundings.

Day 5
Other cultural adventure programs are available upon request. Continue to your next destination.
