Hemingway's Moveable Feast: Paris and Champagne Wine Region
12-19 MAY 2007

This Specially designed Ernest Hemingway Travel Destinations program explores Hemingway's life-long love affair with France in a travel program focusing on Paris and the Champagne wine growing region. The tour will reference Hemingway biographies, magazine articles and novels including “The Sun Also Rises” and “A Moveable Feast.”

 

Saturday, 12 May: Paris
11:30 AM – Program officially starts in the tour hotel lobby.
12:00 PM – Join the tour leaders for lunch.
Afternoon private bus tour of Paris including new Shakespeare and Company bookstore and Cathedral of Notre Dame. Overnight Hotel Lutetia or similar. (Evening Reception)

Sunday, 13 May: Paris
Transfer approximately one mile to St. Louis Island (the site of Three Mountains Press) to walk Hemingway’s own route to his first home on Rue du Cardinal Lemoine in the area of Place de la Contrescarpe. We then follow the old Roman street of Rue Mouffetard and enjoy its festive market. We continue onto the Boulevard du Montparnasse and pass the Statue of Marshall Ney. Visit the La Closerie des Lilas (a Hemingway favorite) for lunch.

That afternoon we can explore this “left bank” Montparnasse area and visit Hemingway sites including his second home, the restaurant La Coupole, cafes like La Rotonde, Le Select, and Café du Dome and bar hangouts like the Dingo and Falstaff. (B,L) Monday,

14 May: Paris
Free Day to visit your favorite museums. (B)

Tuesday, 15 May: Paris
Visit to the Palais de Luxembourg Gardens for an morning stroll and visit to original site of Shakespeare and Company Bookshop, Sylvia Beach’s apartment, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Home and Ernest and Pauline’s Home. We’ll use the time around lunch to walk the St. Germaine area pointing out the Café de Flore, Cafe Deux Magots, and the St. Germaine des Pres Church.
Group Lunch at Brasserie Lipp
Afternoon visit to the Right Bank starting at Café de la Paix on Place de l’Opera and including Harry’s New York Bar and the Hemingway Bar at the Ritz Hotel. (B,L)

Wednesday, 16 May; Epernay
Check out of hotel and transfer by coach to Epernay. Stop en route at Chateau Thierry (WWI American Memorial). Drive through the Marne Valley vineyards (Pinot Meunier).
Private Visit at Perrier-Jouet House (Art Nouveau style)
Lunch at La Table Kobus in downtown Epernay.
Hotel check-in at Hotel La Briqueterie or similar.
Afternoon visit and private tasting in the vineyards of Cote des Blancs (Chardonay varietal)
Dinner at hotel restaurant. (B,L)

Thursday, 17 May: Epernay
Walk through the Hautvillers historical village with a visit to the Dom Perignon Museum.
Private lunch at Chateau Louvois (Laurent Perrier House)
Afternoon visit to the Montagne de Reims vineyards (Pinot Noir)
Private tasting at Deutz in the village of Ay (birthplace of Champagne). (B,L)

Friday, 18 May: Reims
Morning transfer to Reims through the Chatillon scenic wine route. Visit to historical chalk cellar of Ruinart with tasting
Lunch at Le Boulingrin (typical French brasserie).
Tour of Reims including the Cathedral and WWII Armistice location
Evening cocktail at Mumm (Hemingway favorite). (B,L)

Saturday, 19 May: Depart Paris
Private group transfer to airport for departure to U.S. or post tour option (B)
