The BEACHES of ZANZIBAR
27JAN – 30 JAN, 2008

Optional Hemingway’s Africa - Post Tour
(Departures also available year-round)

Zanzibar, also known as the Spice Island, is a semi-autonomous holding of Tanzania, and therefore, when you arrive you may have your passports stamped. There is, however, no additional visa requirement once you have your Tanzania visa.

The remainder of today is free for exploration, walking along the shore, or enjoying a cool beverage as you watch the sun set over Africa.

Overnight: Zanzibar Serena or Mtoni Marine Center (B)

Day 10, 27 January
Today will be a completely free day so that you can discover some of the wonders of Zanzibar at your leisure.

Zanzibar is an enchanting way to end your visit to Hemingway’s East Africa. The island is surrounded by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean where you may choose to scuba dive, snorkel, or try big game fishing as Hemingway himself did during his visit here in 1933 – 1934. For those who enjoy fishing, they will find this an opportunity to try their hand at reeling in blue, striped, and black marlin, sailfish, or even yellow fin tuna.

Other tours include day trips to several of the nearby islands including Mafia, Prison, and Pemba Islands, a visit to the walled city of Kizimkazi where you can also swim with the dolphins, a stroll through the Jozani Forest Reserve where you can see the endemic Red Colobus Monkeys up

For those who are staying to climb Kilimanjaro: You close, or a walking tour of Stone Town, Zanzibar’s quaint village of narrow streets bustling with locals in traditional clothing.

We will be happy to arrange all tours, fishing expeditions, and dive trips for you. Please note that scuba divers will be required to show their PADI certification card. We would like to pre-book your diving for you so please let us know how many dives you would like to take (and specify morning, night, boat, or live-aboard).

Overnight: Zanzibar Serena or Mtoni Marine Center (B)

Day 11, 28 January
Following breakfast we suggest you grab your day bag (containing a bathing suit, sunscreen, towel and camera) and set out to discover Zanzibar’s role in spice and African history while on the Spice Island tour. Though a half-day option is offered, we urge you to enjoy the full day tour as you will visit various sites around the island famous for its history of spice trading and slave smuggling, dine on a full lunch of fresh food prepared using all local spices, and stop at a scenic beach for a late afternoon splash.

By mid-afternoon you will be nearing the end of your day tour and will find yourselves on a beach where you can relax before heading back to the hotel.

Evening on your own.

Overnight: Zanzibar Serena or Mtoni Marine Center (B,L)

Day 12, 29 January
Today is completely free for you to shop, meander the narrow cobblestone streets of Stone Town, take in a morning dive, bury your toes in the sand, or just relax on this enchanting island.

This evening we suggest a sunset cocktail cruise on a traditional dhow. With it’s broad angular white sail cupping the ocean breeze your dhow will float along the coast exposing you to a final view of beautiful Zanzibar. Upon return to the shore, we suggest a candlelight beach dinner at Mtoni Marine. Please let us know if you’d like us to arrange this wonderful final evening savoring the flavors of the Spice Island.

Overnight: Zanzibar Serena or Mtoni Beach Resort; BD

Day 13, 30 January

Clients on this itinerary with the Zanzibar extension will arrive back in the US on 31 Jan
